At Wayside Furniture, our story is woven into the fabric of the community we’ve proudly served for more than 70 years. Established in 1954 by Louis Walker of Toledo, Ohio, the store began as an extension of his passion for quality furnishings. Walker, who also owned Walker Furniture in Toledo, often visited the lakes near Angola and decided to bring his expertise and love for furniture to the area. He built our current building in 1956, and today—nearly seven decades later—we still welcome customers through the very same doors.
Our family’s chapter in this story began in 1971, when James and Jean Knapp, along with Calvin and Helen Knapp, moved to the area to purchase Wayside Furniture. With previous experience in the furniture business, the Knapp family brought dedication, craftsmanship, and a personal touch to the store. For thirteen years, they built strong relationships with customers and the community.
In 1984, the next generation — Carol and Larry took the reins after having grown up in the business. Carol herself began working at Wayside in 1978, and together they have continued to carry forward the values of integrity, quality, and service that define the Knapp family legacy. For over two generations, Wayside Furniture has remained proudly family-owned, supported by a hardworking team of 18 dedicated employees.
Our commitment to the community runs deep. You’ll find us in the 4th of July parade, supporting local fundraisers, celebrating achievements at the Ebbie Awards, and actively participating in the Chamber of Commerce. One of our favorite traditions is displaying photos from every Customer Appreciation Day, a reminder of the friendships and memories that make our store more than just a place to shop. We’re honored to consistently earn Reader’s Choice Awards for Best Furniture Store, Best Flooring Store, and Best Customer Service—recognitions that reflect our passion for helping customers feel at home.
At Wayside Furniture, we’re not just selling furniture, mattresses, and flooring—we’re continuing a family tradition built on trust, community, and a genuine love for what we do.
